Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 2024 Induction Fan Vote!

Be sure to vote for your favorite nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 2024 Induction Fan Vote! You can vote once a day through April 26, 2024. The nominees are Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Eric B. & Rakim, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Jane's Addiction, Kool & the Gang, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, Sinéad O'Connor, Ozzy Osbourne, Sade, and A Tribe Called Quest.

Although I don't listen to these artists every day, I occasionally hear a few of their songs. I feel like I know enough about all of them to know who should be nominated. In no particular order, here are my seven picks...

Dave Matthews Band
Lenny Kravitz
Foreigner
Peter Frampton
Cher
Oasis
Mariah Carey

The Dave Matthews Band won a Grammy for "So Much to Say" in 1997, and four VH1 Music Awards in 2000 and 2001. In 1993, Lenny Kravitz won an award at the MTV Video Music Awards for his hit song, "Are You Gonna Go My Way," and in 1999, he won the Billboard Music Video Awards for his chart-topping song, "Fly Away." Over the years, Kravitz won over 15 more awards. They both released some big hits around the same time and entered the music industry. Nomination well deserved.

Oasis were part of the brit pop scene, rivaling Blur.  Their tunes blew up alternative radio and MTV.  Their popularity peaked in the 90s.  Such smash hits as "Wonderwall," "Champagne Supernova," and "Don't Look Back in Anger" came from their second studio album release,  (What's the Story) Morning Glory? in October 1995.  A record-breaking 345,000 copies were sold, making it (at the time) the second-fastest-selling album in British history, behind Michael Jackson's Bad.  Therefore, they got my vote.  However, I do sincerely wish Blur were nominees!

I was surprised Foreigner and Peter Frampton hadn't already been inducted...  Both are great classic rock artists!  You'd just expect them to already be inducted, you know?  Nevertheless, I am aware of the nomination process, and the judging panel must select from a large number of bands and artists.  Tough job.  There were some major hits by these artists.  You'd have to be living under a rock not to know Peter Frampton's "Show Me the Way," "Baby, I Love Your Way," and "Do You Feel Like We Do?"; and Foreigner's "Waiting for a Girl Like You," "Feels like The First Time," "Hot Blooded," "Cold as Ice," "Urgent," and "Juke Box Hero."

Cher, why not? She had had such an illustrious career. Sometimes I forget she was an actress! She starred in Moonstruck in 1987 and Mermaids in 1990. She covered Betty Everett's "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)," which ended up on Mermaids' soundtrack. Among her biggest hits are "If I Could Turn Back Time," "Strong Enough," and "Believe." She also sang a duet with Sonny Bono, "I Got You Babe."

I narrowed down my last nomination to Sade, Mary J. Blige, and Mariah Carey. I chose the one with the most hits. That is not to say Sade's "Smooth Operator" was not worthy of a nomination, it's just that Mariah Carey had an endless string of hits. Practically, one hit after another. I'll just name a few: "One Sweet Day," "Hero," "Dreamlover," "All I Want for Christmas Is You," "Emotions," "I'll Be There," "Vision of Love," and "Always Be My Baby."

A new exhibit called Revolutionary Women in Music: Left of Center opened today at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The title was inspired by a Suzanne Vega song. The exhibit examines the work of courageous, innovative, rebellious musicians, from the 1970s to the present, who use music, songwriting, and performance to subvert social norms. Appearances were made by Jane Wiedlin of 2021 Hall of Fame inductees, The Go-Go’s, Shirley Manson of Garbage, Lisa Loeb, and Malina Moye. Loeb performed a selection of songs for those who attended the opening.

Following Kate Bush's video biography, St. Vincent performed inductee Kate Bush's “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" at 2023's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Enjoy!

On November 3, 2023, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held at Barclays Center in New York.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2024 Induction Ceremony will take place this fall in Cleveland, OH, with date, venue, and on-sale information to be announced.
