A live performance of Gary Numan's "Down in the Park" from 1980 recently caught my eye, and boy, was it cool! Gary emerges from this makeshift car with the brightest headlines you have ever seen. I'm wondering if he controls the Numan Mobile with a button on his pants? Watch this YouTube video closely at 2:23. He will press on his leg... My only question is whether he presses a button on his clothing to operate the "vehicle." This entire performance is fascinating! In that moment, I wish I could have been there.
The Foo Fighter's version of this song:
"Down in the Park" is one of those songs that just sounds good no matter who performs it, IMO. A mysterious, cool vibe permeates it. I wonder how a non-rock version would sound? Perhaps an orchestra performing it with violins? Gary Numan performed an acoustic version with the help of his daughter below. I really loved it!
Gary Numan's "Down in the Park" is often considered a pioneering track in electronic music. It blends synth-pop, new wave, and electronic rock elements. In its day, it used synthesizers and electronic instruments in a way that was groundbreaking and has influenced countless electronic artists ever since. Electronic music was shaped by it, and it continues to be relevant today.
