David Bowie's Blackstar album

Two weeks ago, David Bowie's new music video from his forthcoming album Blackstar aired. His interstellar art-rock tune "Blackstar" exemplifies Bowie's direction for his future sound and leaves us begging for more. I admire aging artists who constantly challenge themselves with each passing day. David Bowie is pushing 70 and he's still got it! That being said, how much can be expected from Bowie--or any musician--who's on the cusp of maturity and decline? I hate using the word "decline"; it sounds so harsh! But once you reach a certain age, things can go downhill. One's will to do something may be strong, but the body's tolerance for physical exertion and exhaustion ultimately dictates a person's work performance. There's no way around it.

In June of 2004, Bowie had emergency heart surgery after suffering a heart attack on stage in Germany. That was over 10 years ago. Everyone involved with Blackstar insists that Bowie is in "fine health" after making such a rigorous album. What about touring? Bowie's last live performance was in 2006 at a New York charity event in which he sang "Changes" with Alicia Keys. Many doubt he will ever perform again. He doesn't do interviews anymore either. From what I have read, his life now is about his art, and you can connect with him through his lyrics. After 26 studio albums, 110 singles, 3 soundtracks, 13 video albums and 50 music videos, I respectfully accept his decision to not perform or do interviews anymore. The fact that he is still producing albums is enough for me. I am just grateful to have lived through an era of groundbreaking music which David Bowie--and many others--were part of.

David Bowie's music video "Blackstar":

Blackstar, is due out on January 8th, Bowie's 69th birthday. Thank you, David Bowie, for the good times and your music! Happy birthday...
